The zone is a layered composition of element as a result of the presence of sea beside the beach and its dune system that ends with maritime pine trees.

The aim of the project is to give prominence to the area of Maria Pia, through giving a attractiveness and recreational value, a sort of  a “bridge” between Fertilia and Alghero, in a way that the area could attract visitors from Alghero’s city center through a system of complex services, routes and activities, in an area with an high environmental quality and establishing the basis for a future progressive recovery of the natural ecosystem towards the original condition.

.Architecture for coasts: Maria Pia

...with Me[A]lab

The idea behind the project is to create the right space for a natural expansion of the dunes and it aims to prevent the sand removal due to customers and cars. This goal pass through the redesign of the main road and specifying mandatory pedestrians paths.

We intend to convert an oppressive infrastructure, in a “place of being” for pedestrians, cyclists and sport persons, in a way that it amplifies the potential of the whole system, and today experienced only as a service for the beach. Furthermore the footpath that today affects the city’s port and the beach of San Giovanni, is thought to be extended till the town of Fertilia. mainly natural materials are provided, they are easily available on site and a prevalent use of wood in order to build paths, service areas and kiosks.

A set of sails will be used to cover the kiosks and open areas in order to provide awing and sun shelter, that elements works as a characteristic element in the whole project. Photovoltaic modules inserted between the textures of the sails, along with mini-wind turbines contribute to the energy demand.
